Yes. The detection engine runs entirely in your browser using JavaScript. Your text is never sent anywhere unless you explicitly enable the optional HuggingFace API integration (which you can see in Settings and must opt into per-session). The default mode has zero network requests.
For long English text (500+ words) from GPT-4 or similar, accuracy is approximately 75–85%. Short texts and non-English texts are less reliable — the tool shows a warning in those cases. No AI detector is 100% accurate, including paid tools like GPTZero. We recommend treating Veratext as one signal among several, not a final verdict.
The biggest difference is privacy. GPTZero sends your text to their servers for every analysis. Veratext processes everything locally. We're also open source, free for core use, and include compliance presets (FERPA, GDPR, HIPAA) that GPTZero doesn't offer at our price point. The tradeoff is that a server-side model with billions of training examples may have higher raw accuracy on some edge cases.
Yes. The FERPA preset limits history retention and provides tamper-evident export logs suitable for academic integrity documentation.
